The other investors in the funding include Mitsubishi UFJ Capital and Silicon Valley VC firm Sozo Ventures.

Coinbase has also announced that it has formed a strategic partnership with BTMU to support its long-term international expansion efforts.

Coinbase said in a statement: "At Coinbase, our mission is to create an open financial system for the world by building the bridge between financial institutions and the new world of digital finance.

"Partnering with leading global financial institutions is a key part of our strategy and we are thrilled to be working with BTMU."

Established in 2012, San Francisco-based Coinbase offers a range of bitcoin payment services, including bitcoin wallets, exchange, and merchant services.

As of January 2015, it had 1.8 million users and 37,000 merchants using its services, with operation in 32 countries, SiliconANGLE reported.

However, Coinbase currently does not provide bitcoin services in Japan but plans to expand in Asia with support from BTMU. Singapore is the only country in Asia where the company offers services.

Coinbase said: "While we do not yet offer digital currency exchange services in Japan, we are committed to continued international expansion and look forward to working with BTMU to support this focus in key markets in Asia and globally."

In June, BTMU said that it was conducting experiments on a digital currency using bitcoin based technology.

The announcement was made after a report by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper which stated that the bank was readying to launch its own digital currency next year.

Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi spokesman was quoted by Reuters as saying: "We can only say that it’s true that MUFG is conducting demonstration experiments on the ‘Coin’ within the company utilizing a block chain technology."
