The study conducted in February on behalf of credit reference agency Equifax involved 2,090 UK adults.

In the survey, 32% of respondents preferred passwords as their security method, while 31% opted for fingerprint recognition technology.

Further, 21% of respondents said they would like to access bank accounts by answering security questions, while 3% preferred voice recognition solutions.

The survey revealed that 45% of respondents get frustrated with access banking and other financial service websites as they have to remember passwords and security answers.

Another 25% said they are not interested in using additional devices to login into online financial accounts.

Equifax fraud and identity expert John Marsden told media sources: "As technology evolves, we are seeing a shift in security preferences online.

"New biometric technologies could potentially see traditional means for authenticating identity online, such as passwords and security questions, become a thing of the past."

According to the study, plans are also underway for a new system, which would be developed to verify the identity of internet users who have plans to open new bank account.
